Now that gnulib has converted to git[1], I'm working on doing the same for M4.
The initial git conversion is complete. Feel free to check it out: http://git.savannah.gnu.org/gitweb/?p=m4.git There are still some things to work out, such as editing the project description file stored on git.sv.gnu.org, adding hooks so that commits still send mail to the m4-commit list, making sure the git-cvsserver read-only mirror works and publishing its address, making the master branch alter the version number according to git history (gnulib's build-aux/ looks handy here), and disabling the old CVS repository. Until all those things happen, I will be trying to keep the CVS and git repositories in sync, but it will be a manual process so there may be some lag between when a patch is committed to one repository and when it shows up on the other.
