the kernel binary is not put on the images.  it is read through the m5 simulation system, and you can modify your source linux, compile it, and point to it in your python config file m5/config/fullsys/System.py. 

and like nate said, there are some diffs that we have made to the standard kernel distribution to make it better performing, so you might want to grab those and patch them in.

The normal stuff does work, but if you want the basic diffs we use, you
can get them from sourceforge in the files tab.
