Actually, technology is a misnomer, or at least the term is being
misused here. It is not a question of technology, but how it is used
that is key. Two thousand years ago casting bronze, carving stone,
painting in fresco, performing plays were all technologies that were
being used. The fact that in performing a play (or telling a story) the
performer did not ask the audience what choices should be made at times
in the storyline is a choice. In the example that Penn Jillette gives,
computer technology allows the reader/participant to choose one of
several possible storylines. The decision to use the technology in that
way is a choice made by the creator of the work. It doesn't mean that
it is a good choice, or a preferable choice in storytelling - it is a
choice. Technology is a tool, and computers (and other digital media)
are specific tools we have now. The choices we make as artists in using
those technologies are the significant factors.
