Mail Art Call: Art for Museums
What are your favorite things about museums? Perhaps a specific piece
of artwork that you love? The way museums make you feel? Maybe you
had a wonderful experience in a museum as child? Or do you love the
way local history museums are stewards of their community's history?
Maybe
you like the way museums allow you to return to the past or visit a
community that you would never see otherwise.
I am issuing a mail call on the subject of museums. You can do just
about anything you'd like with the subject as long as it has
something to do with any aspect of a museum. For the purposes of this
mail call, we will use the definition of a museum from the American
Association of Museums which encompasses not only art, history, and
science museums, but also children's hands-on museums, sculpture
gardens, aquariums, planetariums, zoos, etc.
Each person participating will create an artistamp on the theme of
museums (or any of the objects inside them) and design a "mailing"
for everyone else signed up. You could do something as simple as a
postcard with your artistamp on it, or it could be an envelope with
some of your stamps inside or artwork about the subject. The envelope
is usually decorated with the theme as well. Don't forget real postage
so it gets to its destination!
You will not know how many pieces of mail art to produce until the
signup is complete. At that time I will email any details needed
(including the total number) along with the full names and addresses
of each participant. The deadline to sign up for the mail call is
January 20.
As special part of this mail call, I am asking everyone to make one
extra piece of mail art. It will be sent to the Michigan Museums
Association via my address. Once I receive all the mailings, I will
scan them and put them up for sale on eBay. The proceeds of the sale
of the "Mail Art for Museums" package will be donated to the Michigan
Museums Association , a nonprofit
organization that promotes museums in Michigan. I am a board member
of this terrific organization that helps train, encourage, and
promote the museums of Michigan and their staff, volunteers, and
visitors.
What should you do if you'd like to participate?
1. Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to let me know you'd like to be a
part of this mail call. Please include your full name and address.
Deadline for signup is January 15.
2. Wait for me to email you with all the details including number of
participants, names and addresses, and a "mail by" date.
3. After you receive this email, prepare your mail art and mail one
to each of the participants, plus one for the Michigan Museums
Association benefit auction.
4. Sit back and enjoy the wonderful art pouring into your mailbox!
