Eden Morfaux, a French artist I met here in Paris, did exactly that... he 
produced 8 pulpits out
of wood, showed them for one day in succession at Le Cube Rouge here in Paris, 
then unleashed them
on the public, placing them in parks, street corners, next to buildings all 
over the 14th
arrondisement.  It was a fascinating project, extremely well executed that 
touched upon minimalist
sculpture à la Artscwhager, social function, public function, speech, silence, 
found object and of
course theft, grafitti and destruction (within a day or two all of the pulpits 
were destroyed,
vandalized or stolen, the last one taken by a church!).

These mystery sculptures had an origin.
