POST: ART SUPPLY DRIVE FOR CHILDREN IN AFRICA/ THE BUDUBURAM ART SCHOOL IN GHANA
Dear Artists, I hope you are enjoying the sweet, playful snowfall! I wish you the most creative, joyful, and healthy holiday season. As many of you know, I have felt inspired on many levels to share the powerful, nurturing experience of art, self-expression, and creativity for years both through my own artwork and the teaching of self-expressive art exploration at The Art Studio NY. This past year, I felt a strong pull to share the joyous celebration of art with children throughout the world who often do not have the opportunity or means to enjoy art's magical, healing powers. I planted the seed, and miraculously, I received communication from via an embassy member regarding The Juvenile Global Artists Association (JUGLAA), an art school that has been created within a Refugee Settlement Camp in Ghana, Africa. The families living in the refugee camp, many of which were child soldiers, face enormous challenges such as the basic needs for food supply and proper health care. Amongst the community, three young Liberians possessed a deep love for the arts and saw the vital need to empower their youth through artistic exploration and art education. A large part of the healing for this community is being channeled through the creation of uplifting, empowering, and creative art opportunities on an ongoing, weekly basis. Every Friday night and Saturday throughout the entire day, nearly 100 children flock to The Buduburam Art School with excited anticipation, hope, and joy. It is typical that nearly 10 children share one pencil and small piece of paper during their art class, as their art supplies are scarce. The Art Studio NY is running an art supply drive and will send multiple shipments of art supplies to The Buduburam Art School in early January of 2008. Stores such as Staples and Gold Leaf Stationers have already agreed to donate art supplies. Since the need is large and the experience of creating art should be limitless and abundant, I invite you to donate art supplies for these young, budding artists in Africa. Through art, children in Buduburam have hope for creating a brighter, more joyful, and creative future. Together, you and I can make a difference by sharing the sacred, healing experience of artistic expression. At the end of this email, you will find a list of materials that are most needed at The Buduburam Art School. Anything that you choose to share will be appreciated and used with gratitude by the children of Buduburam.
