Have you turned off the auto rotate option, I think it's in settings
under display, that would drive me nuts too, I think you have the htc
chacha phone, if you disable this, it should always remain in portrait.
On slider phones, with this disabled, the phone only switches to
landscape when you open the keyboard.

Okay,
So, I've had the phone, for a little over a day now, and I'm truly
liking it. Thanks To Dusty who has a wealth of information, I am up &
running pretty confidently, at this point, for it being my first day.
I've been able to answer calls, get my voice mail, read SMS messages &
respond, view call log information & clear it, select ringers and
notification sounds, etc. A lot of hard work for today, so now, I'm off
to bed, in prep for work tomorrow!
