I understand it was some sort of hardware failure.  I am getting a
replacement tomorrow and the dead one is going back to Sony.

Oh dear, did you wait until it said to disconnect the phone before removing
the cable, the first time you reboot it after the update, it can take some
time, but what you're describing does not sound good.
