I think the issue might be that you need to bring up the system's call
screen during the call, by pressing the menu key. Then you can use your
keyboard to enter numbers and symbols.

I am also using the status.  The star key is to the left of the zero on the
bottom row and the pound key is to the right of the zero.  If that fails use
the arrow keys to move around the dial pad and when you find the key you
want hit the enter key.  I hope this helps.

I have the HTC Status and am using MA for my screen reader.  I notice that
when I am in a call and an automated system asks me to enter a number
followed by pound sign, I can enter numbers, but can't enter pound.
Unfortunately, some automated systems are not satisfied without that pound
sign.  The question is What can you do in these situations where asked to
enter a pound or a star in the automated system?  I can't use a lan line,
because I don't have one.
