The books are in their own protected format and if you want to listen
via your phone, yes you do need the app. It does work rather well on the
phone.
Through your computer you can listen to books or also transfer them to
one of many other devices such as the Humanware Victor Reader. You will
need to install the audible software on your computer to do that.
