When reading a text message character, by character, word, by word, etc… you
could do this by pressing your menu button while in a text message. Keep
pressing the menu button to switch through the menus.
This also works with in an email as well.
You should take the time to read the on phone menu for M.A. and take some
time to get to know everything you can do with your phone. You would be
amazed in what you would learn.

when you're on a call and you hit the home key, and M.A. just says call
active, then just hit it again, and it should take your to your home
screen.
when you are on a phone call and you are looking to send or read text
messages... your phone should be on speaker, or you should have a
Bluetooth, or a headset on. do not try to check text messages while the
phone is on your ear.
having the volume buttons to answer calls, would not affect your ability
to read or send text messages, while on a call.

just do the following:
while on the phone call, just hit your home key, then move down to you
get
to home screen, hit enter, and choose the person you want to send a text
too.
for example, click on send new message, and then select from contact,
choose
the person, and then type the message, and click on send... you could
also
read any text messages you get while on a phone as well.
you should also be able to browse the internet by doing the same thing
only
choose web, and so much more.
