  The Danger in Lying

The deliberate concealing of a small truth can be the beginning of great
deceit. - stonepeace

For the person who transgresses in one thing, I tell you,
there is no evil deed that is not to be done.
Which one thing?
This: telling a deliberate lie.

The person who lies,
who transgress in this one thing,
transcending concern for the world beyond:
there's no evil he might not do. - The Buddha (Iti 25)

What great truth do you seek in this world,
what great truth do you seek to spread,
when you are not truthful to this world? - stonepeace

Very often, those discovered lying are never disclosed, not even by their
victims - in the fear of the liars' further and subtler treachery targeted at
them when they are uncovered. Sometimes they are so thoroughly disappointed and
disgusted that they simply steer clear. However, the liars would have lost the
trust of these people "forever", without the liars themselves "knowing" what
went wrong between them. These victims might also quietly spread the truth that
the liars are liars, so as to warn others, leading to distrust of the liars by
more people. Of course, this spreading of distrust is disencouraged. But it
tends to happen when some liars are found to be too cunning to be offended,
while the victims want to protect others. The victims, even with the best of
intentions, thus prefer not to confront them on their lies. Liars should thus
confess their lies, whether they are caught or not - for their own sake and for
others' - for fear of the compounding of great negative karma
from a vicious cycle of distrust started by they themselves. Only they can end
this through sincere personal repentance.
