Salam Pembebasan, Berikut ini adalah surat dari PP HIKMAHBUDHI kepada Raja Thailand terkait penangkapan Ajahn Sulak Sivaraksa beberapa waktu lalu dengan tuduhan penghinaan terhadap raja (lese majeste).
Ajahn Sulak dan beberapa aktivis sosial kerap terkena pasal ini, yang sebenarnya lebih sering dimanfaatkan oleh penguasa yang terusik oleh kekritisan mereka. Pemikiran Ajahn Sulak sebagai seorang tokoh Buddhis Internasional, pendiri International Network of Engaged Buddhist (INEB), dan peraih Right Livelihood Award (Semacam Nobel alternatif, yang juga diterima Munir) pernah dimuat di kompas satu halaman, sekitar 2 tahun lalu. Saat ini Ajahn Sulak sudah bebas bersyarat dan sedang berada di Inggris, di usianya yang sudah di atas 70 tahun beliau terus mempertahankan semangatnya dalam menjalankan aktivisme sebagai pengejawantahan nilai-nilai dharma. Menjadikan dharma sebagai pegangan dalam membangun dunia yang lebih baik, bagi semua bangsa, bagi semua mahluk. On behalf of The Union Of Indonesian Buddhist Students (HIKMAHBUDHI) I would like to convey our points over recent condition in Thailand and the recent happening over our teacher Sulak Sivaraksa. On this occasion, we’d like to express our concern about recent political situation which a number of demonstrations happened relates to the widespread discontent among Thai people toward Mr Samak Sundaravej’s governance and Mr Thaksin. The aforementioned condition should, therefore, has led Thailand’s security, politics, and economics remain unstable. We are hopeful that the goverment could untangle those problems by means of nonviolence and with democratic measures. We strongly hold firm that King’s wisdom could beckon a guidance to military and civil governance to serve the people and behave in a moral rectitude in accordance with The Buddha teachings that uphold a just and civilized humanity. Regarding the arrest of our teacher, Sulak Sivaraksa, on 6th november 2008, we see the charge over him was inequitable (Despite he has been released on bail, he is required to report himself to the local police office every month). At this point, we raise the subject of consideration that Sulak Sivaraksa is not someone who should be suspected or to be put under constant surveillance of the authority on account of doing a treasonable act to the goverment and the Monarchy. As we mentioned above that Sulak Sivaraksa is our teacher and The Union Of Indonesian Buddhist Students (HIKMAHBUDHI) is a member of Indonesia of International Network of Engaged Buddhist (INEB), a network which founded and chaired by Sulak Sivaraksa, the Buddhist students here in Indonesia deemed Sulak Sivaraksa as a wise teacher who always supports and gives a guidance in many ways to enact the spirit and values of The Buddha for the benefit of our society, nation, and environment. We strongly believe he does the likewise in his country, Thailand. Sulak Sivaraksa has been one who defends the sovereignity and the Monarchy of Thailand and will never let them neither be belittled nor be abolished. Should in many occasions through his writings Sulak Sivaraksa had criticized or hinted at Monarchy, it was anything but his concern and devotion to the Monarchy despite those critics and opinions conveyed to the Monarchy seem to be churlish, those all due to his unwillingness of not letting the Monarchy’s authority to be deprived of power. What Sulak Sivaraksa has done is in accordance with the teaching of The Buddha on “Right Speech��?to Prince Abhaya that can be found in the Pali canon like this, “What do you think, prince: If this young boy, through your own negligence or that of the nurse, were to take a stick or a piece of gravel into its mouth, what would you do?" The Buddha asked the prince. "I would take it out, lord. If I couldn't get it out right away, then holding its head in my left hand and crooking a finger of my right, I would take it out, even if it meant drawing blood. Why is that? Because I have sympathy for the young boy," the prince replied. The teaching of The Buddha mentioned above hence refers to Sulak Sivaraksa’s views on The Monarchy which interpreted as offensive, but actually for the sake of Monarchy’s and Goverment’s dignity. Thus, the charge over him made by the goverment or military towards his statements deemed insulting the Monarchy is unreasonable and exaggerated. We, The Union Of Indonesian Buddhist Students and all INEB fellow have a confidence in Sulak Sivaraksa that he always striving for the benefit of the people of Siam and keep loyal to the Monarchy. We also believe that Sulak Sivaraksa will behave himself as Upasaka (The Buddha’s Disciple) and upholding the Dhamma and precepts which are free from political and power ambition. Based on those considerations, we, The Union Of Indonesian Buddhist Student (HIKMAHBUDHI), humbly asked His Majesty to take heed of this case by urging civil government and military groups to fully release Sulak Sivaraksa and revoking all charges over him and restore his name in Thailand, likewise. We, The Union Of Indonesian Buddhist Students, and all Buddhist society in Indonesia pray for His Majesty laurels and may the sovereignity of Monarcy and Thailand staunchly stand upright for the sake of the people’s prosperity and welfare. May the Noble Teaching of The Buddha remain perpetual and everlasting in Thailand and be an inspiration to the Monarchy and Thai people to abide in rightness, justice, and wisdom.
