Hello Lovette,

• Do these gps apps come with the maps or do you download them separately? Also
what is the difference between an IPHone and a Smart Phone?
thanks.

Ariadne GPS uses an internet connection and downloads maps from Google. The
default maps app on the iPhone and iPod Touch also requires an internet
connection to use for the map data. You may have used this on the iPod Touch
to find nearby locations. It is possible for these applications to estimate
your location using the locations of nearby Wi-Fi connection points, but
without the level of accuracy of a built-in GPS device on your iPhone. Apps
that report the locations of POIs (points of interest) in your vicinity, like
the free AroundMe app or Where To? (currently $2.99, but has been on sale for
$0.99 a number of times), which can update the distance and direction to a
point of interest, also rely on an active internet connection. To give you an
idea of space requirements, the older versions of the Navigon app with complete
maps for North America or for Europe ran to nearly 2 GB in size for each
region. In recent versions of Navigon, you can download smaller subsets of
maps to your device.

All the GPS apps that were mentioned that calculate nearest intersection rely
on maintaining an active internet connection. Many of them will work on an
iPod Touch using a personal wireless hotspot, but with reduced accuracy in the
locations.

An iPhone is one example of a smart phone. Smart phones are basically phones
that support applications, such as the ones you have on your iPod Touch, in
addition to performing the normal functions of a mobile phone.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
