Hi All,

It seems there are a few more iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad apps that might be of some
interest, since this is roughly the 3rd anniversary of the App Store. The
AppleVis site has been down for several hours, so I can't check/post news there.

First, I'll mention that the AppAdvice web site has a number of App Guides and
App Lists, which are useful when you wonder whether there's an app for
something in a completely new area. One of the lists they recently came out
with is "Apps for the Blind and VIsually Impaired". There are probably other
apps you might include here, but this is a good list to read through, and a
number of the apps listed there are free.

The Ariadne GPS App that Rossy posted about (also on the App Advice list) has
just had a recent update with some nice fixes. Connection to the App Store and
iTunes Store has been a little quirky at times throughout today, but if you
have this app on an iPhone or iPad 3G+Wi-Fi, you might check for the update.

In addition to the accessible Chess-Wise app in the above App List, Shredder
Chess has a free Lite edition that is accessible. The regular version of
Shredder Chess for the iPhone, which normally lists for $7.99, has just gone on
sale for $1.99 for a limited time. iSpectrum Color Blind Assistant, normally
$2.99, just dropped to free. (None of these color identification apps can
probably beat using the free VizWiz app on an iPhone or iPod Touch or iPad with
a camera, but this is a reasonably good app among the others in the store, and
worth checking out.)

Here are the links:

Skizzix.com

If any of you need to check version update history or price changes for apps, a
good way to do this is to run a Google search for the name of the app and the
term "appshopper". The appshopper.com web site keeps separate web pages for
each app and tracks the history of version releases and price updates. When
I've located the AppShopper web page for an app, I use item chooser menu to
look for the "App Activity" or VO-U to look for the "App Activity" heading,
and then read the version and price history. There is also a free "AppShopper"
app, but it's less reliable at locating the apps. If I find the app I want to
track using the "AppShopper" app instead of in the web site, I use a three
finger flick up to scroll to the end. "App Activity" is second from the bottom
of the screen. Double tap to find the history of pricing and versions.

This works for checking the frequency of updates and when expensive GPS
navigation apps are likely to go on sale. I first found this because one of
the first apps I got for my iPod Touch lost accessibility almost immediately.
(It was lucky I downloaded a version that worked before I even got my iPod
Touch). It took about a month and a half for them to fix it. Now, when I want
to check when new versions are released in the case of accessibility issues, I
go to the AppShopper version history.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
