Hi Jules, The spell checker can be brought up with Command+Shit+Semi Colon. You should then be able to focus directly on it. If for some reason though you aren't focused on it. use the Window Chooser Menu. Bring this up by pressing VoiceOver keys +F2 (F2 should be pressed twice in quick succession).
As for the whooshing sound you describe, I get this two and it happens when you transition from one page to another. You can stop this by simply using the arrow keys to go back up to the previous line or page and then back again. You might also have found that when you try to read by line or sentence, that VoiceOver does not work as you expect. To overcome this, make sure that your cursor is at the beginning of the line.
