Hello Anne, Chris, and Others, There was a recent discussion of tools for ePub creation by Liza Daly at the Threepress Consulting Blog. She works on ePub standards (both current and future) and has been involved with Bookworm (O'Reilly's web based ePub reader -- DRM free only) and Ibis reader (another web based reader which you can use on iOS devices, as well, but through the Safari browser). The basic summary is that for regular computer users, there are two main avenues for ePub creation on the Mac: Pages and Scrivener. The subject was posed as a question with a 2-part answer in her June blog post: "Can an author create an EPUB file using normal tools? Part 1: Pages": <http://blog.threepress.org/2011/06/01/can-an-author-create-an-epub-file-using-normal-tools-part-1-pages/>
The lead-in sentence for the answer was "Yes, but it may require a Mac." The second installment blog post dealt with "Part2: Scrivener": <http://blog.threepress.org/2011/06/02/can-an-author-create-an-epub-using-normal-tools-part-2-scrivener/> Note that the articles refer to some screenshot images that illustrate options, but there is discussion in the text about abilities to handle tables, lists, and images. Both these articles deal with detailed examples of xml code. However, these may be of interest for the general overview of what's available as authoring tools to generate ePub. HTH.
