You can just use the arrow keys to move by caracter. To move by word, hold the 
option key while using the left and right arrow keys. Note that voiceover reads 
things here a bit differently than how windows screen readers read. When you 
press right arrow, then press left, you will hear the same character, this is 
because your cursor is actually in between characters and so voiceover is 
reading the character the cursor is passing over. The windows screen readers 
read the character to the right of the cursor, which in some ways really isn't 
accurate.
