Paul, you can simply set up the account as imap, and simply never
send anything while using that account. That will allow you to read
all the messages, but as long as you don't delete them, they will
still show up on the other computers pulling that account as well.
Apple mail always checks that the server you have listed *can* send
mail, but you can always remove that entry after you've got the
account setup. That would then pop up a message asking which server
to use when sending mail, something your other accounts shouldn't do
if mail handled them properly.
