Hello William

That's often how it happens; these thins just suddenly go. Is the cord that you 
get on restart also distorted? Are you getting the same distortion on 
everything and does it happen with headphones or an external speaker set?

I'm no expert, just trying to suggest a few basic things. You might also try 
the PRAM reset, hold down the P, R, Command and Option keys when you power on 
the machine. Wait till the cord sounds 4 times and then release them.
