When you use traceroute, you only use the domain name, not the
protocol. I.E. drop the http:// or the ftp://, traceroute is
concerned only with the host itself, not the service it's providing.
traceroute softcon.com will show you how many hops it takes to
connect from you to softcon.com.
traceroute yahoo.com will do the same, you should try various
servers, and just check out how many hops they are from you. You'll
notice different hop counts from time to time, this is because of the
way the internet works, if a host drops out, your packets are
rerouted through another one to reach your requested location.
It's an interesting exercise, and provides a bit of entertainment
when discovering just how truly connected your isp truly is. :)

Hello to all. I'm trying to do a trace route to a certain website
to collect info for the web master. I tried
traceroute http://listen.ultrastreams.us with no joy. It says
unknown host and even google fails. Is the command wrong and if so
what's the correct one? I used to be able to do this under snl.
Take care all.
