Hello Eric,
I run Mac OS 10.7.1 on an iMac with 4 GB RAM. I previously had virtual
machines for Windows XP and Windows 7 64 bit running on the latest release of
VMWare Fusion 3.x. These have been installed for a long time and the details of
how I installed them is lost in the past.

When I heard of VMware Fusion 4.0.1 I downloaded the 30 day free trial which
resulted in a DMG file in my downloads folder. I opened this and then did
Shift+Command+C in Finder to find the resultant virtual disk. I copied the file
VMWare.app from there into my applications folder and opened it. That took me
to a dialogue where I had to enter the licence key which after some difficulty
I found on the VMWare fusion download page. I then used the file menu in VMWare
Fusion to locate and open my virtual machine for Windows XP. That resulted in a
dialogue asking if I wanted to upgrade that virtual machine to which I replied
yes. I then had to be patient for quite a long time but eventually heard the
Windows start up music. After another long delay Window-Eyes started talking. I
then shut down Windows XP and using the VMWare fusion file menu opened the
virtual machine for Windows 7 64 bit. Again I was asked if I wanted to upgrade
that virtual machine to which I replied yes. Again a
fter a long delay I heard the Windows start up music and I was on my way. Note
that subsequent Windows startups were much faster.

I did not change any of the VMWare fusion preferences or any of the virtual
machine settings inherited from VMWare 3.x.

Note that upgrading your virtual machine for VMWare 4. means it will no longer
work with VMWare 3.x.

Hope this helps. If you need more I can start my virtual machines and let you
know the VMWare preferences and virtual machine settings I use.

Like many others I mostly use native Mac OS and only start Windows when Mac OS
runs into problems e.g. with some web pages.

Best regards.....
