Hello James: Actually a better way to get to the recovery partetion is even before hitting the power button hold down command-r at the same time and hit the power button.
Next wait for a minute or so and do command F5 which will then bring up VoiceOver. Interact with the table and when you hear disk utility stopy intereacting and VO right to next. If the latter, can I suggest that you switch to your Admin account to see if that helps. Secondly, have you tried repairing Permissions. This should reset them to the default values and hopefully give you access. To do this: 1. Restart your Mac 2. Just before you hear the bong noise hold down the Option key. This will allow you to see the Startup and Recovery Volumes, as well as any other bootable Volumes connected to the Mac. At this point, you'll have no speech I'm afraid, but if you don't have any external drives connected at startup, then just press right arrow once to highlight the Recovery partition and press Enter. 3. After a while, the Mac will go quiet, now you can enable VoiceOver and navigate to the Disk Utility to Repair your Permissions.
