Hello Mike,

If you live near an Apple store, you might want to take the Macbook in and have it looked at. At some point in the last few years Apple had apparently made some exceptions in their warranty service to cover problems related to the plastic macbook cases. I know there was an issue with cracking and while it sounds like your issue might be unrelated, I think it might be worth having an Apple store take a look at it.
