Hi John,
Thanks much for the instructions. I seem to hear static in response to every
button press. Just to rule out a miscommunication, I assume the larger button
is in front of the two smaller ones? I only ask because what I think of as the
right button seems a bit smaller than the left one. Well I tried it both ways
to be sure. The other possibility is that the IOS5 instructions are not
applicable, but I suspect that does not matter because this static was
definitely introduced by my attempt to update.
Thanks again.
Geoff

Hi Geoff,
OK, this is what I have. I don't know how well this will work, but this
is from the accessibility people at Apple.
If VoiceOver becomes disabled on your Apple TV, you can use these steps to
enable VoiceOver again.
1. Press the Menu button (the smaller left button) ten times on your
aluminum Apple remote to ensure that you are on a main menu screen. Each
time you press a button, you should hear a confirmation tone.
2. Press the Right button, on the circular navigation button, four
times to navigate to the Settings screen and press Select (the middle of the
circular navigation button).
3. Press Select again to choose the General menu.
4. Press the Down button on the circular navigation button eleven
times. This takes you to the Accessibility Menu.
5. Then press the Select button twice. This will select the VoiceOver
option and enable it.
You should hear VoiceOver become active.
You can find the main Apple TV support page linked below. That page provides
additional information about using the Apple TV.

turning on because it emits static when I press a button on the remote. It
also emits static when I use it as a receiver in Airfoil. I thought I'd get a
voiceover prompt by power cycling, but that hasn't done the trick.

anything) the screen says.

now is how to un-fubar it. Perhaps the next step is to connect to HDMI and ask
a sightling what if anything is displayed.

attempted to install the IOS5 update by going into settings -> general -> check
for updates. The first time it appeared to hang on the update button, but when
I selected it again, got a dialog asking whether I was sure I wanted to quit.
So I let it go for a while and then heard Samantha from the other room. I came
back in and found an okay button but could not ascertain what the message was
(presumably the ubiquitous 3200 error). I again checked for updates and
selected update.

static when Apple tv is active. Since it had been several hours I power cycled
the apple tv but that had no affect -- I waited about two minutes but only
heard the extra static. Also pressing buttons on the remote causes static.
The device does appear to be on my network because its visible to Airfoil, and
transmitting to Apple tv results in additional static. I double checked the
cabling, though none of the hardware had been touched until I power cycled. I
considered connecting via Ethernet, but decided that couldn't be a factor since
the device is visible to the network.

a suggestion I suppose its time to call Apple?
