So, I checked the support Communities and did a search for Error (a). The
general consensus was to keep trying and it would eventually restore. Well I'd
already tried it once today, but I decided, what the heck? I plugged it in,
told it to restore, and it is right now restoring my iPad apps. Thank God!

How long will this restore thing take, anyhow, and what *is* this new voice?
