I have had it working on battery right from the start!  It doesn't happen 
automatically, but you can hit the sync button on the phone, or in iTunes at 
any time.  It only happens automatically when the phone is plugged in.  It's 
also worth noting that you can still sync in the usual way, which is 
considerably faster, if you're putting stuff on your phone on your way out the 
door, as I so often do!!!!
