Hi Jane, Colin and Bryan have answered some of your questions. AFAIK there's no limit to items you can add to the dock, although personally I've been annoyed by the App Store behavior of adding every new app I might get to the dock -- I usually only keep the apps that I access frequently in the dock.
Starting with Snow Leopard, you no longer need the separate application and script to add items to the dock; just select the item(s) in Finder and use the shortcut Command+Shift+T. (I had to re-assign the shortcut I used with Spark for my customized AppleScript to announce the time, since I set that up back in Leopard when Command+Shift+T didn't overlap with anything I wanted to use.) However, for anyone who is running Tiger or Leopard and wants to put items into the dock, you can get this from Tim Kilburn's VoiceOver Downloads page: http://web.me.com/kilburns/voiceover/downloads.html It's listed under Finder "Put Items on the Dock: Lets you add folders, files, servers and such to the dock" with the download link immediately after. The original script for "AddItemToDock" is from Lucid Systems: http://www.lucidsystems.co.nz/projects/additemtodock/index It showed up under the software listings pages that Apple maintained some years ago, and we wrote an Automator wrapper around it to let this work under Tiger and Leopard so people could use it transparently without having to launch Terminal and use the command line. I'm pretty sure the this works for both Tiger and Leopard, since I sent him the Automator workflow for Tiger, he checked it for Leopard compatibility, and sent me back the amended workflow again for checking before posting it at the download site. The download link comes with full instructions and the AddItemToDock script that Lucid Systems made available. HTH.
