Thanks, I just took a gander at the dialog and think I could get her through it remotely. Trouble is that it might take a half hour at least to get her to select the store menu and correct option.

Still wonder if I can have her do the setup and then simply restore from her older firmware 3GS in order to recover her contacts and apps.

Best regards.
Geoff

Hi, if you go to iTunes on the computer and under your or in this case her
account you can change your apple ID and password as well as other things
and this should not make any difference as you are not creating a new one
but modifying the old ones. But to be sure I would call or write Apple
support. I sure they would be willing to help. HTH

Subject: Changing AppleID while migrating from a 3GS to a 4S.

Greetings all,

My Mother has a 3GS running IOS 4.3.5 and just received her 4S, and keeping in mind that she is one of the least tech sabby people I know, I'm trying to make the migration process as painless as humanly possible, and save as many steps as possible for when I can tend to them in person. Actually this will
benefit me as well because if I dared admonish her to press any key she
really is one of those people who will hunt and peck around for that
specific item!!!

Another complication is that since she can no longer receive email at the
address linked to her Apple ID I want to switch that without screwing up her
access to the apps she previously purchased.

Her machine is vista, but I doubt this will affect the order of events that will need to take place? My goal is to take the absolute minimum of steps,
so as not to want to kill her from 1000 miles away. I had her install the
latest version of iTunes, and back up her 3GS. Now, would it be necessary
for her to change her Apple ID, or can this wait? I realize that she won't receive receipts from the app store, but my real concern is that there does
not seem to be a way to change this on the phone once its set. If the
change would take affect later painlessly I'd rather not have her worry
about that now. Same goes for iCloud and upgrading the firmware on her 3GS. I wonder if I could just have her attach her 4S via usb and restore from her
older firmware 3GS backup so as to recover her old environment and save
iCloud and AppleID migration for later?

TIA for any/all suggestions and best regards.
Geoff
