Hi Catherine,
One easy way to put apps in the Dock that works in even is to simply open
them, which automatically puts them (at least temporarily) in the Dock. Then
navigate to them in the Dock (e.g., by using either the Mac OS X shortcut of
Control-F3 or the VoiceOver specific one of VO-D to go to the Dock, then
quickly type the first few letters of the name ("t e r") or use your arrow keys
to move to the app, and use VO-Shift-M to bring up the context menu. Press "O"
to go to "Options" then right arrow to "Keep in Dock". Earlier versions of Mac
OS X just had the "Keep in Dock" option in the main context menu, I think.
Starting with Snow Leopard, you can highlight an app or folder in Finder and
press Shift-Command-T to place this item in the Dock.
