Hello Courtney,

If this helps, here's what I get on my mid-2011 Air running Lion 10.7.2 when
attempting to use the built-in internal microphone, a set of iPhone earbuds
with inline microphone plugged into the audio port, and a Blue Snowball USB
microphone. The following information comes from System Preferences / Sound /
Input tab / Sound input devices table.

1. With no external audio input devices plugged in my list of input devices
shows a single entry with a name of "Internal Microphone" and a type of "Built
in."
2. When I insert a set of iPhone earbuds into the audio jack, the list of
choices in the sound input devices table remains at just one item but that item
changes to a name of "External microphone" while retaining a type of "built in."
3. When I remove the iPhone earbuds and plug in the Snowball USB microphone an
entry with name of "Blue Snowball" and type of "USB" is added to the sound
input devices table. In this scenario I now have two entries: the blue snowball
and internal microphone.
4. If I plug in both the iPHone earbuds and the USB Snowball microphone, the
list of input choices reverts to just one choice: the one named "External
microphone" with type of "built in" which refers to the iPhone earbuds.

HTH,
Bryan
