Hi,

The favorites recipes are grouped according to their ratings, so I guess that's 
why you need to rate a recipe before being able to add it to your favorites.  
Besides, it could be a recipe that you keep there that someone else likes.  
Also, because there are a lot of varieties of similar  soups, it probably helps 
to distinguish your very favorite version of, say, Potato Leek soup, in 
contrast to others you've tried and liked.
