Hello All,

I'm interested to hear from folks if and when you get a chance to poke around
in the new free "iBooks Author" Mac App released by Apple today.

At first glance, it seems like a bit of a cross between a word processor and a
full page layout program. I've only spent an hour or two with it so far but was
happy to find that VO could find and interact with almost all elements and, in
fact, I was able to create a new document and insert a table and it was nicely
accessible to VO.. That's right: the process of creating the table, the process
of making changes to the table, and the process of navigating the table all
seemed to be VO accessible. If you're familiar with using the Inspector in
Pages, try creating a table in this new app and then use the Inspector to play
around with it. Pretty nice stuff. Of course, a couple of tables do not a
document make, but perhaps the other page elements are equally accessible.

While Apple is touting the app as a textbook creation tool designed to produce
documents for consumption through the iBooks 2 App on an iPad, it does sound
like there might be a way to save or export your creation in a format that is
readable outside of iBooks. I exported their default document to PDF and the
result seemed to be readable in Preview.

The App seems targeted for the creation of media-rich interactive e-books, and
there are tools for inserting all kinds of stuff that one might assume would be
difficult for a reader to access, but I found this hopeful note in Apple's App
Store description: "• Add accessibility descriptions to any widget so that it
can be used by sight-impaired readers easily with VoiceOver."

The app is free and available now in the Mac App store, at least here in the
US,.

Cheers,
Bryan
