Yeah, as mentioned, you can use text edit for your html editing if you check the option to ignore rtf commands (no idea why they called it that, since it ignores lots more than just rtf codes, but ...) And, the other option is to download a copy of taco software's taco html editor. It can be found at
http://www.tacosw.com
and it not only gives you an area for editing your html code, but it also gives you the option to see the code in a preview window, so you can determine if it's working properly, or to launch your web browser to view it directly. It's the editor I use, and though it has it's quirks, I've not found anything I can't do with it. It even has templates to get you started if you want to add sections of code, such as tables, you simply tell it how many rows, how many columns, and it inserts all the code for you, saving a lot of counting to make sure you got it right. :) It isn't free, but the registered version is well worth the price if you do a lot of html editing, and especially if you prefer to keep control over your html code, instead of using one of these html generators that add lots of bloat into your html code.
