For folks who want more malware protection than is offered by the traditional
"head in the sand" approach, there are a few decent free malware scanners
available. Note that free versions are usually just on-demand scanners and do
not necessarily protect you in real time. I've tried ClamX, Sophos & Intego in
the past year or two and am currently using Intego VirusBarrier Express, which
is free and available from the Mac App Store, at least here in the US. I had
been using the Sophos product for a while, but Sophos has refused to fix some
annoying accessibility issues. The Intego product has a very limited feature
set but I've found it to be nicely navigable using VO.

Also, it's important to know that malware often utilizes third-party software
such as Java, MS Office and Adobe products to gain access to your system. One
variant of the malware in question uses a vulnerability in java to silently
infect unpatched and unprotected Macs. Apple released 2 java updates this week
to address this and other security vulnerabilities. It's a good idea to run OS
X Software Update every day and check your third party software for updates. I
use the Macupdate Desktop for that purpose.

Cheers,
Bryan
