Hello Murielle,

Do you have administrator access to the computer? Can you check what the
available resources are in terms of memory and processor? (VO-m to the Apple
menu, arrow down to "About This Mac" and press return, then read off the
information about the system processor and memory).

You may be able to go to "System Preferences" and then to "Users & Groups" to
check whether you can uncheck some programs on the "Login Items" tab that will
run at startup. (I will have to check whether the name is the same under
Leopard -- there will be some item under System Preferences that is like "User
Accounts" that controls these settings). In the older versions of Mac OS X,
like Tiger and Leopard, when resources were more limited, and especially on
systems with less memory, you were more likely to encounter "VoiceOver busy"
messages. This was usually encountered when using Safari and iTunes, and media
programs that streamed content from the web, and cached contents in system
memory made this worse. In Tiger, simply changing preferences so that PDF
files were downloaded (to be read in Preview locally), instead of being
displayed in your web browser, helped avoid these busy messages and lockups.
Disabling the use of Adobe to view PDFs and using Preview also helped
a lot. You can't run Microsoft Office for the Mac with VoiceOver, because it
isn't accessible, so that's another resource hog for your system.

Travis may have some more suggestions about how to configure your system, but I
think you may want to limit the number of processes that are running, that you
cannot actually use.

Best,

Esther
