Hi, I'll just add that some apps, like Adobe Reader, completely ignore the speech rate settings in System Preferences when using the system voice. You have to find and set the voice rate within that app's preferences, since otherwise the text-to-speech voice is maddeningly. Actually, Adobe Reader is the only app I've found to do this, and the only reason I can imagine for having to use this application is if you need to read a document protected with their DRM and absolutely have to use the app. Even when the document is "displayed" under those terms, it may be inaccessible to VoiceOver, in which case you'd be much better off just screen capturing the images, sending them to an OCR program, and reading them with something more accessible.
