Hello group No less than 4 times within the last 24 hours I have had to write to people reminding them off list that messages larger than 40K will not make it to the group. In the vast majority of cases these excessively large messages are due to people being too lazy to remove the redundant messages in a chain. We specifically prohibit this in list policy and it's causing us a lot of unnecessary and totally tedious work.
There are two good reasons for this policy: 1. It avoids repetitive downloading of often irrelevant messages by our members 2. It needlessly causes the list archives to either become bloated or else to simply lose messages which would otherwise have made a good source of reference. This is particularly true of the public archive on Google where size is somewhat restricted. We feel that the time has come when we need to do something to protect our list from excessive breeches of policy in this way. Therefore, if we have to politely request somebody refrain from quoting irrelevant redundant messages more than once, from now on, that person will be placed into moderated mode until they desist. Since we don't have the time to check and approve moderation each time a message is sent, this will result in delays and, when the offender has a genuine list message, will undoubtedly result in frustration. We have absolutely no desire to do this, or to cause people that frustration. Therefore we would ask for cooperation. Please think about what you're quoting before you hit the "Send" button. Placing somebody into moderation mode is a very last resort as it would result in tedious work for us as well as irritation for the sender. Please, don't make us make you the first person to whom we've had to do this! If you have any queries regarding list policy, which everybody was sent when they joined the group and which can always be reviewed at <http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/Mac-Access-Welcome.html>, don't hesitate to contact us of list: <[email protected]>. We have recently lost members because of the fact that list policy is being flouted in several ways. So we need to tighten up on this.
