Hello All,

The folks at Adobe have released the fourth preview version of Adobe Digital
Editions (ADE) 1.8, which is their attempt at making an accessible epub/PDF
reader that can handle reading materials scrambled using Adobe's DRM protection
scheme.

While the ADE 1.8 preview does enable the User to open some documents, turn
pages, and read a page at a time using VO, it Unfortunately still lacks some
basic important reading functions such as the ability to read by paragraph,
sentence, word or character, or to interact with the text. In addition, the
"annotate" functions are not accessible, and several items on the toolbar are
unlabeled.

I've had occasion to use ADE when reading several DRM-protected articles for my
schoolwork and I think this application has the potential to be a useful tool
if Adobe can manage to complete the process of making it fully VO-compatible.
Unfortunately, as is so often the case with Adobe, they are moving at a snail's
pace and don't seem to be too concerned with the missing functionality.

If you're interested in installing and trying this free application, or if
you'd like to leave feedback for Adobe specifically regarding this app, I've
included the appropriate links below.

that posting to Adobe's forums requires you to login with your Adobe ID, and
the process for adding a new post uses a difficult-to-navigate interface.
