They didn't say the "backspace" key but, I tried both delete keys and they
don't seem to work.  There may, however, be a message on the screen asking
for something.

In any case, I can boot from the thunderbolt drive using the option key and
cursoring right and enter.

Well, you live and learn! So by the "Delete" key, I presume you mean the
"Backspace" key?

This is new to us, we've always used the Option key alone when trying to
boot from external hard drive media or, if memory serves, Option+R when
booting from the recovery partition.
