Hello Lynne, I think that the prefix should be "https" and not "http". But I'm not sure that the automatic log in string with user name and password works for general logins. If you use: <https://files.mac-access.net?login=mac-access;mac-access> you're taken to the web site, but I don't think the login name with a hyphen will be automatically parsed. It works if you type "mac-access" (without the quotations) into the text fields for the login and password at the web page, but not if you pass it in with the link.
I've only uploaded two items to this site so far. One is a file named mac-access.url that you can place on your Desktop, or in your Dock, or other location of your choosing. When you open this file, your web browser will open to the Mail Archive web page for this list. If you type search terms into the text box of the archive page and press return, you'll find links to posts that discuss the topics you included in your search terms, along with a short section of the matching text, similar to doing a Google search but for this list. You can also use this file on a Windows machine, or mail it to others as an attachment. And you can use it as a pattern for creating similar files for other web sites, if you make a copy of the file, open it in TextEdit (with the "Open with" option of the contextual menu), and change the URL to another web location, then rename the file. I've also created an AppleScripts folder and uploaded the AppleScript I posted in response to Sarah's question of a week ago. This script can be used to convert formatted .rtf or .doc files, such as created by Microsoft Word, into plain text versions. I asked Gordon and Lynne about starting a place where we could upload scripts and other useful material that is related to discussions on this list. This was prompted by some of the recent discussions, where I've ended up posting lines of AppleScript code. Although the forum lists contain a number of such examples, in order to use them, list members must currently copy the sections of from posts, launch the AppleScript editor, paste in the code, compile it, and then decide what format to save it in order to use the script. So it seems much easier if we can simply place copies of such scripts somewhere where any list member who is interested can simply download them. HTH.
