You need the partition map to be set correctly when formatting a drive before it can be used as a bootable drive. I don't remeber the exact sequence, but you need to erase the disk and then there will be an advanced or details button that needs to e examined to set the partition map correctly. Also, some older Macintoshes (perhaps only the pre-Intel) can only boot from a firewire hard disk.
