Hi Josh,
I haven't noticed number 1 on your list at all, and number 2 is intentional. 
I'm not sure about 3, Messages works just fine over here. Perhaps VoiceOver is 
trying to say that you have a new notification from it? That much works pretty 
seamlessly for me, including when Messages is closed and I get a new iMessage. 
Wish I had more meaningful advice to offer. Do you enable auto speaking of new 
incoming messages?
