Are you talking about a USB thumb drive or a SD card?  I would presume the 
former.  If you use the recovery tool, you'll have no trouble.  I think this 
one is just one instance where people sometimes make it more difficult for 
themselves, purely unintentionally, of course. :)

But yes, by thumb drive we mean a USB thumb drive, not a hard drive.
