No you can recover everything. the time machine in the command r option recovers basically the OS so if you messed up some ware or blew something up you can recover the OS. and it will all work the same again before the mistake.
To recover documents you can do that with in the os itself using time machine. 1. brows to the folder you want to recover 2. go to extras, time machine, time machine controls and wait. 3. Invoke the window chooser and enter on the time machine controls. you will be presented with a time line. Go using the slider or the buttons to the date you want to restore to and hit restore. you might have to navigate twice to the folder whilst in this mode. I don't know why, but this method works. You can always copy and pate documents by hand if you don't have them on your machine as this is is only for stuff that is there.
