Hello Trevor A couple of suggestions here. Firstly, make sure that there are no blank spaces at the end of the line if you are pasting your serial number via the clipboard. This sometimes happens when you import the key via a text editor such ass TextEdit. Some software expects the last character of your serial number to be the last character on a line and, if a space is present it interprets that as an illegal character.

When I have put the key in and click on OK, it brings up another window with an OK button and something that just says button. I have tried both and I am sent back to the enter your serial key window. I checked on the Cakewalk site where the software came from and they recommended repairing disc permissions, which I did and still no luck. I hope I am wrong but, I think it is probably something I will have to get a sighted person to look at.
