Paul,
You can now do all this and more on the iPhone and iPad alone. The only time you would need a computer is when you want to transfer stuff to iTunes, such as music, but much is done over the air now thanks to iCloud.

Hello,
How do I set up a brand new iPHone or iPad these days? Can I just unpack it,
charge it up, turn it on and press the home key three times to start VoiceOver
and then do everything else with speech? Do I have to connect it to a computer
at any time to set it up? What happens if I do not have a computer? Can I set
it up without sighted help?

If I am new to computers and thus have nothing can I buy an iPad and use it as
my only computing device? Depending on the answers to the prior paragraph I
could maybe use an iPad as my only device if I always accessed the Internet via
the mobile phone network. However if I wanted wifi could I set up my broadband
modem using just an iPad or would I need to have a computer owning friend to
set up broadband for me? I recall that my broadband modem needed a LAN cable
connection to my iMac to set it up. Could one connect a LAN cable or even a USB
cable to an iPad perhaps via some sort of adapter?

I need to get the facts right for the above for a web page I am working on. I
set up my iPhone 3GS a long time ago (late 2009) and did not need any sighted
help. However it was a used iPhone and I did have to connect it to my iMac
which was already running VoiceOver. I recall that back then I could not have
set up the iPhone without sighted help if I only had a Windows computer. Is
that still the case?

Many thanks for any help.
