Paul,
Honestly, you don't need an Airport Express/Extreme. Any wireless router
will do. They'd just need on the IPad to go into Settings, then Wifi, then
double tap on the name of the wireless network. If the network is secured,
they'll then be asked to type in the password. Then when done, they'll
simply double tap on join, and there you go!
As for it acting as a d s l modem, no. I don't think that's possible. The
Airport devices only serve as routers, as far as I am aware. So they'd
still have to get an I S P, and have them supply either the modem, and a
router, or get your own wireless router. I prefer anything Cisco/Lynksys.
Stay away from DLink, whatever you do! They're by far probably the most
inaccessible router I ever've seen in my life! and that's coming from a
certified network administrator since 2001.
Either that, or the ISP may be able to give you a modem that will act both
as a modem as well as a wireless router all in 1. That would be in my
opinion the most ideal sollution.
Thank you kindly,
Christopher-Mark Gilland.

Subject: Setting up a wifi network using an iPad
Hello,
In an earlier post I asked whether a blind person with no computer at all
could set up an iPad as their only device without needing sighted help or
any other computer.
After further research it seems that this is now possible. My next
question is whether this person could set up a broadband wifi network
without sighted help and with no computer other than their new iPad. Doing
a Google search suggests that this can indeed be done by using an Apple
Airport Express as the wifi base station. I don't know anything about
Airport Express so have a couple of questions....
- Can Airport Express act as an ADSL modem and a wifi base station?
- If I have no other kit can I set up a telephone based wifi network just
using Airport Express
- If I have no other kit can I set up a cable based wifi network using
just Airport Express
- Can I do all the above using VoiceOver and with no sighted help
If the answers are all yes then that is a great solution! Are there any
problems with this approach?
Many thanks.
