Hi Matthew. You could try a different cable, or if possible, try reformatting the drive, but as you say, your Mac's drive isn't big enough to store the content. but if you've had the drive for a long time, the constant connecting/disconnecting of the cable, could've caused the USB part of the drive to become unsoldered from the main drive, thereby causing a shortage in power, which disconnects the drive. The worst scenario would be that you would need to get a new external hard drive. As to anyone else - do correct me if I'm wrong. Hope this helps. Lewis.
