----------------------------------------------------------------------
My father just got a gleaming new iMac to replace his old G5.
The interesting thing is that the G5 is the only device we can
connect to his cable modem that gets an IP address from the
provider. I suspect one must enter a password to the modem to
get an address as is the procedure in PPPOE or point-to-point
protocol over Ethernet but I don't know any password and my
father doesn't remember setting one but the fact is that the G5
logs in every time and gets a public internet address. Anything
else we connect to the same modem including a laptop using Linux
and DHCP gets no connection at all.

I have been helping my father and will call the cable
provider today to see what they can tell me about the procedure
to receive an IP address via DHCP but I thought I would ask
whether or not there is any unencrypted file on the old mac that
might have this password stored in it. Keep in mind, this is not
the admin password. We have that just fine. This is the input
the script used in the network setup which fires off each time
connectivity is restarted.

I sure wish I had a working hub and the snort utility on
that laptop right now. I feel like I have been hunting sharks
with a ping-pong paddle and two paper clips.

My father will need a router so which ever one we get
needs to perform this login so I must know what protocol that is
and hopefully the people at the cable company can tell me that.
If I knew what the g5 is doing now, I wouldn't need to call
anybody.

I thought of tcpdump and guess what; it's available
starting in leopard. That pretty much sums up this saga so far.

Thanks for any constructive suggestions. The G5 is so
old that we must go with what is there so if it isn't already
installed, it is not going to get installed.
